What is Expressive Arts Therapy?
Some children and teens may feel their emotions in a deeper shade and might need a little extra support to process their experience of their internal and external worlds. These are young people who may not experience any serious symptoms but have minor difficulties in social interactions or at home.
Parents or teachers might notice general “angst,” moodiness, or intense emotions that come out in ways that negatively impact the child or teen's ability to thrive at school or at home.
Here are some characteristics of a young person who might thrive and benefit from an expressive arts and sandplay process:
-
highly creative and imaginativeoften express a wide range of emotionsoften express emotions very intensely
-
have difficulty making friends or fitting in with groups of other children
-
seem different from their peers in a variety of ways
-
often choose to be alone and engaging in solitary imaginary play
What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a specialized form of therapy designed to help children express their emotions, process difficult experiences, and develop healthy coping skills through play. Since children, and even teens, often struggle to communicate their thoughts and feelings verbally, play therapy provides a safe and supportive environment where they can use toys, games, art, and imaginative play to explore their emotions and experiences.
Play therapy supports children and teens facing a range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges, including anxiety, ADHD, autism, grief, and family transitions like divorce. With the guidance of a trained therapist, play therapy can help young people feel heard, understood, and empowered to thrive.
